7-13, The Perfect Weight for Horton
by
Chris Horton
This month was a little bit
different than the past. I had finished a Monday pre-fishing trip at
Lake Fork preparing for the coming Saturday’s tournament. It was a
decent trip, not a lot of numbers but I did manage to land a 6 pound
bass and pattern a crankbait bite that I figured would give me a good
chance in the Media Slot Lakes Tournament. As the week went by I was
getting more and more excited about the tournament to come. I was
sitting in 24th place in the point standings (the tournament that I
zeroed thanks in large part to a broken trolling motor still hurts)
and a good finish at Lake Fork would virtually guarantee me a spot in
the Media Team Championships in October. I was focused on
fishing....until Wednesday. You see my wife was 8 months pregnant and
we went in for a normal doctor visit and to make a long story short we
were in the hospital beginning Thursday. Her due date was not until
July 12th but Sunday it was told to us that my little boy was coming
on Monday and after an eventful day Jace Christopher Horton was born
at 8:18 officially weighing 7 pounds and 13 ounces. What a joy! Both
baby and mom are doing fine and Dempsey (my almost 4 year old
daughter) is excited to be a big sister.
It was such a blessing to see God’s
hand at work in the whole situation. We have a wonderful Christian
doctor who handled all of our challenging events and kept us calm,
which is not an easy thing to do in my case. I strongly recommend Dr.
Heckman to anyone in the Dallas area. He is awesome! The staff at
Baylor Hospital was fantastic as well. My wife was a little sad when
we found out that she was going to have to have a C-section because
she really wanted to listen to Praise and Worship music to calm her
during delivery. Wonderfully, when we got into the operating room
Christian music was playing. You can call it coincidence if you want
to but as the nurses cleared my little boy’s lungs and he took his
first breath Michael W. Smith’s song saying “This is the air I
breathe” was playing. Coincidence, no it was God showing us that He
was in control all along.
The funny thing is listening to
everyone tell me that now that I have a son I have a fishing buddy.
They obviously haven’t seen my daughter at work. She caught a bass on
her very first cast at 3 years of age. Those Snoopy rod and reels
actually do work! Fishing is not just for guys...but that is a story
for another article. I am going to cut this article short. I have a
challenging game of Candyland to play with my daughter Dempsey and I
am sure Jace will need a changing soon. Fishing will have to wait a
bit. Luckily my next tournament is not until August. By the way, my
partner fished the Lake Fork tournament alone and we are still 24th in
the standings. We are still in good shape to make the Championships.
Until next time, good luck and good
fishing.
