January Fishing at Santee Cooper Lakes
by Inky Davis

On Jan. 4, 2005, Bert Hall & my self went bass fishing on the upper end of Lake Marion (Santee Cooper Lakes). In prior weeks, the water temperature had dropped to about 45 degrees, but during the next couple of weeks we had very warm weather & the water temperature had moved up to as high as 66 degrees before it started to fall during this current cold snap. We were casting crankbaits (Bill Norman Little n, Rapala Shad Raps, etc) around cypress trees. The bite was very good for this time of year and we ended up with 15 bass caught & released, plus several jackfish. The 5 bass in the photo went around 20 lbs with the biggest going about 5.8lbs.

Two days later on Jan. 6, 2005 under the same conditions on the trip on Tuesday Jan. 4, 2005, my friend, Jim Marshall, & myself fished the same area of the lake & caught 12 bass with the biggest bass going about 6.8 lbs. The 6 in the photo going around 20-22 lbs, with all the bass being caught on Bill Norman & Rapala crankbaits. I went bass fishing downlake on Thrusday the 13th of Jan. 2005 in the morning before the current cold front arrived & by luck went & got on the bass right off the get-go. Using Rapala crankbaits, Zoom worms & Yo-Zuri Vibes caught 18 bass up to 4lbs in 3 hours. I went back one day later, on Friday afternoon) after the front passed, windy & colder conditions & caught 6 bass on Rapala crankbaits & Zoom worms. It now is very cold & will give an update later on when I go again.

Thanks for reading my report. Inky  www.inkydavis.com
