Lake Fork - February, 2005

Lake Fork: Right now Lake Fork is full and the water temp will range from 49-53 degrees depending on where you are and the time of day. Although we have had a few days lately where we have caught as many as 20 Bass per day, the Bass fishing has remained slow most of the time due to the cold water conditions. Lake Fork is in great shape for the Spring fishing just ahead but until we start to see the water temp come up along the creeks and in the back of the coves, the action will not heat up to much. For the Bass fishermen who are just looking for that one big bite that might catch a state record fish, now is the time to get started fishing. Most of the fish that are being caught right now are real fat and healthy and many of them are up shallow looking for warmer water. Over the past few days the best bite has been on Traps, Spinner Baits and 1/4 or 3/8 oz Jigs in 4-10 feet of water and staying around the grass has been the key in finding some nice fish. In a couple of weeks things should start to really heat up and now is the time to get your Spring and early Summer trips booked before all of the good dates and lodging are filled up.

Mexico: So far this Spring El Salto and Comedero have produced some really large Bass as well as some good numbers. Even though Comedero has produced the bigger fish so far, Salto has been really been hot this season due to very good water conditions and the fact that most of the rain has remained up in the mountains. We have caught lots of Bass up to and over 10 lbs this season at Salto and it looks like this trend will continue for the rest of the Spring season. It should remain good at Salto until late May or mid June.

Comedero has been up and down so far due to all of the rain that for some reason does not want to go away in the mountains. We have caught some Big Bass up to 14 lbs and from time to time lots of 10-12 lb fish with some of the best fishing coming around the full moon. Since all the rain began back in December the lake has not had much of a chance to clear up and has remained off color. Comedero usually drops about 1 foot per day on a normal basis during this time of year but due to the rain it has stayed about the same level or in some cases will rise a little. Our Camp will stay open longer this Spring due the water levels and I think we will still see some 15-16 lb Bass caught in the next few weeks. There is no doubt that Comedero is going to produce the larger Bass caught in Mexico today and long term all of this new water that we have received this season will make for some fantastic Bass fish just ahead. The fishing should be very good around the Feb and March full moon. If you are looking for a Bass around 10 lbs or so then Salto is very good but if you are like us and you are looking for a chance to catch a Bass in the teens or even Bigger then keep watching what happens at Comedero in the very near future. We are about full for this season but we do have some spots left for Salto and Comedero and I have already started planning my trips for 2006. Now is a great time to get signed up for 2006. I will be going back to Comedero with another group on Feb 21st and will return to Lake Fork with another report by March 1st.
