Hammerin' Hare Lures
Product Review
By Mike Pace
I recently had the opportunity to fish the new Hammerin' Hare
series of lures by Strike On! Fishing Products. These lures use
a skirt made of real rabbit hair. The material just comes alive
in the water. Even the slightest movement causes the skirt to
quiver. They looked very enticing to me.... but would the fish
agree?
First I tried the Hammerin' Hare Largemouth Jig. This jig
is is a flipping jig designed to be used in heavy cover. These
jigs are hand-crafted, one at a time. They employ a laser sharp,
heavy gauge Eagle Claw hook. The black fiber weed guard can be
cut to your own needs.
This particular day I had the chance to use both the watermelon
and blue-black colors. The lake I was on is fairly shallow with
quite a bit of weed growth. I was using the jigs two ways. I
looked for obvious weedlines that were located about fifty to
seventy five feet away from shore. There was a pretty abrupt
weedline so I decided to cast parallel and work the edge. I was
making long casts and letting the jig hit bottom. Keeping my
boat in position I would hop the lure just outside of the weedline
all the way back to the boat.
After fishing a section of weed line I would move my boat
closer toward shore looking for open pockets in the matted weeds.
I would then pitch or flip (depending on the distance) to the
open pocket and just let the jig fall to the bottom. After a
few seconds I would shake the jig and move it so slightly. Most
of my hits came on the initial fall or within a few seconds after
the first time I moved or shook the bait. This was great because
I could fish faster and hit more pockets.
I caught a nice bunch of largemouths using these methods.
I found that on this particular day the watermellon worked better
in the clearer areas of the lake with the blue-black working
better in the cloudier water.
I am very impressed with the action on these baits. I should
tell you that before trying the Hammerin' Hare jigs I had a strong
preference for the Denny Brauer, Strike King jigs. Don't get
me wrong those are great lures but on this particular day I got
many more strikes on the "Hare" jigs.
These Hammerin' Hare Largemouth Jigs sell for just $2.99 each.
A great price for a hand made quality lure like this. Take a
look at their selection at

I was so busy that day fishing the jigs that I didn't get
a chance to try out the Hammerin' Hare Spinnerbait. In addition
to their seductive double tail design they have a unique blade
combination and geometry. The blades clack together every so
often (which you can pretty much control with your rod tip or
reel action) which makes the lure look like an injured bait fish.
Have you noticed how when fishing crankbaits or spinnerbaits
that you can sometimes trigger strikes by making the bait run
into a object. This causes the bait to have an erratic action
or dart to the side. Well the Hammerin' Hare Spinnerbait does
this without having to hit an object. I can't wait to try them
out at my next opportunity.
Strike On! has some very unique lures that are certainly worth
trying out. I think that when you do you will want to make them
a part of every bass fishing trip or tournament.
