Power Bass Fishing

POWER BASS FISHING, WHAT IS IT AND DOES IT WORK?

How is power bass fishing different than finesse bass fishing? Why are so many pros power bass fishermen?

Power bass fishing is a state of mind. It is saying to yourself that you will cover a lot of water in search of active bass. This is the opposite of finesse bass fishing where you go slowly and try to finesse inactive bass into striking. Power bass fishing involves three things, boat control, lure selection and exploitation of each strike. Other useful tips are included to further explain power bass fishing.

  1. Boat Control: Keep the boat moving. The goal is to cover water until you find active fish on this particular day. If a good spot does not produce, go the next good spot. Keep going until you find today's hot spot. Do not spend a lot of time where there are no active fish. Try shallow and deep. Try different cover or structure. Keep going until you find the fish.
  2. Lure Selection: Use fast moving lures that let you cover a lot of water like crank baits, spinner baits or jerk baits. Choose the lure based upon the cover and depth of each spot fished. Try different lures until something works.
  3. Exploitation of a Strike: When you get a strike, ask why did that fish strike this lure in this spot? Is this an isolated fish or are there more bass ready to bite here? Often there are other active bass within a few feet of the one just caught so stop the boat. Work the immediate area thoroughly with many casts. Change lures and work the area more. Often the active fish will be in an area of a few feet only. Sometimes an entire bank or point will have active fish. When they stop striking one lure, change to another and fish the same spot again. Try finesse lures to further exploit the spot. Often several bass can be caught from one spot this way.
  4. Once you have exhausted that spot, ask where can you duplicate this type of depth, cover or structure? Where is another identical spot? Find the pattern for that particular day.
